MEPS Requirements for Home Entertainment Equipment

In November 2006 E3 released a proposal to introduce interim standby power regulations for home entertainment equipment in 2008.

The Equipment Energy Efficiency (E3) Committee has agreed to industry requests not to proceed with proposals for interim standby requirements in 2008 (4 watts and 6 watts with a recording capacity) in favour of the already announced 1 Watt regulatory limit. This decision does not affect other proposed regulatory measures for televisions, external power supplies and set-top boxes that also come within the home entertainment sector.

On 8 November 2006 the then Ministers for the Energy and Environment portfolios announced the Australian Government's commitment to regulate all electronic appliances to meet 'one watt' in passive standby mode, by no later than in 2012. The E3 committee will use a broad horizontal definition to capture all electronic appliances including all types of home entertainment equipment (that produces records or assists in producing an audio or video signal or output). The intention now is to regulate these products to use not more than 1 Watt in accord with the Ministerial announced timetable. A regulatory impact statement introducing this horizontal one watt standby limit is being prepared and should be released for comment within a few months.
