This Energy Rating Audit was commissioned by NAEEEC and prepared by Millward Brown. Stage One of the report was released to NAEEEC in December 2000 & Stage Two was released to NAEEEC in April 2001.
This survey was commissioned to evaluate the success of transition to the new energy label that occurred over the period 2000/2001. The first stage was conducted early in the transition period and the second stage after the transition was complete. The two studies covered all labelled appliances: refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, clothes dryers, dishwashers, and airconditioners. Stage one covered 150 retail outlets and 14,500 appliances on display. Stage two covered 401 retail outlets and 30,800 appliances on display.
Both stages found that well over 90% of all appliances on display carried an energy label. At the end of the transition, nearly 90% of appliances carried the new energy label.
The aim of the first stage of the audit was to obtain an overview of whether the label change had occurred successfully in a limited number of retail stores. The objectives of this initial stage were as follows:
A second, more comprehensive stage of this study followed in March 2001 and aimed to obtain a more detailed assessment of the compliance level for displaying the new energy efficiency rating label, with a more representative and significantly larger sample size of electrical retail outlets selling the relevant appliances throughout Australia.
One of the objectives of this second, more comprehensive, study was to aid government jurisdictions in identifying breaches of the energy labelling regulations.
The report follows an earlier audit of retailers in 1998. The most recent surveys were conducted in 2004/2005.
