The following report prepared in early 2007 for the Equipment Energy Efficiency Programme (E3) outlines the case for television energy performance standards and comparative energy labelling.
Television has become the focal point for much of our family entertainment, so much so that there are now the equivalent of 2.4 televisions in each household, with total stock exceeding 18 million television receivers in Australia.
Power consumed by televisions has increased dramatically in the last decade due to both changes in technology and increases in screen size across the technology types. Energy consumption could double over the decade commencing 2004 in the absence of market interventionist measures.
Compelling evidence exists that there is scope to reduce television energy usage through the introduction of an energy labeling scheme.
