Some domestic gas appliances in Australia such as heaters and water heaters are labelled to show their energy efficiency. This Australia Australian Gas Association system is only voluntary in New Zealand, and has not kept pace with modern gas technology. This makes it difficult for buyers in both countries to distinguish more efficient gas products to save on running costs or greenhouse gas emissions. If a trans-Tasman energy labelling scheme was developed, it would allow buyers to make choices – but to do this, several obstacles need to be sorted out before a scheme could be effective. This discussion paper highlights issues and potential benefits of developing a mandatory trans-Tasman labelling scheme under the E3 program, similar to the star rating label on electrical appliances.
