The Equipment Energy Efficiency (E3) Committee is considering improving the energy performance of heat pump water heaters through potential MEPS and energy labelling. This work has been identified under the National Hot Water Strategic Framework (NHWSF).
Performance testing has occurred and a product profile is currently being developed. The product profile provides an overview of the heat pump water heater market in Australia and New Zealand, and investigates options to drive improvements to energy efficiency, including the implementation of MEPS and/or energy labelling.
It would be intended for MEPS and labelling to be introduced from 2013.
Three standards have been developed to determine the energy performance of heat pump water heaters:
- AS/NZS 5125 (Heat pump water heaters – Performance assessment)
- AS/NZS 4234 Appendix H (Air source heat pump water heater task performance evaluation)
- AS/NZS 2712 Appendix H (Test for air source heat pump water heater low temperature classification)
These standards can be purchased from SAI Global.
