A range of products are required by law to be registered for energy labelling or Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) in Australia. Registration applications must be made in the format as prescribed in the applicable Australian Standard. Such applications must be lodged with any of the regulators in Australia or NZ (note that special conditions are applicable for NZ applications).
Registration for MEPS is currently available for the following products:
If you wish to apply for an exemption from registering your product for labelling and or MEPS you must complete an Application for Exemption and lodge this with one of the regulators.
The regulatory program is constantly being reviewed and upgraded and from time to time there are revised or new MEPS levels for products. and occasionally revised energy label requirements. Therefore for many products there are sometimes several versions of the relevant standard which could be used for registration purposes. The latest list of regulatory requirements, the standard and revision date that is applicable and the current Registration Expiry Dates for each product are now available. Reference should also be made to Australian Standards – Current Status and Updates for a full listing of regulated products, standards and work in progress.
For information on the current Standards applicable to New Zealand MEPS see the Energy Efficiency (Energy Using products) Regulations 2002. For general information about current MEPS requirements refer to EECA.
Traditionally, an applicant copied the forms in the relevant standard and submitted these by mail to their chosen regulator. While this option is still available, the preferred method for making an energy labelling or MEPS application is now via the Online Registration Database (see details below). This is a wholly web based registration system that can be used by anyone with access to the internet. A user of this system fills in an online form then electronically submits the form for approval to their regulator of choice.
Benefits of using the Online Registration Database are:
