In AS/NZS 62087.1(Int)-2009, a television set is defined as “an appliance for the display and possible reception of television broadcast and similar services for terrestrial, cable, satellite and broadband network transmission of analogue and/or digital signals.”
The relevant standards for televisions are:
AS/NZS62087.1(Int)-2009: Power consumption of audio, video and related equipment, Part 1: Methods of measurement
AS/NZS62087.2.2(Int)-2009: Power consumption of audio, video and related equipment, Part 2.2: Minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) and energy rating label requirements for television sets
These standards can be purchased from SAI Global under licence from Standards Australia.
From 1 October 2009 in Australia, televisions manufactured or imported for sale in Australia are required to meet Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and mandatory energy labelling requirements. An approved Energy Label for televisions must be displayed on all products which are offered for sale in Australia.
A fact sheet on television labelling and MEPS provides more details.
On line registration is now available (See making an application for MEPS for details). All models imported after 1 October 2009 must be registered with one of the New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria or South Australia regulators.
The power consumption of the television is determined in accordance with the AS/NZS 62087.1(Int):2009. This covers three possible modes: passive standby, active standby and on mode power (average). This standard is based on IEC62087:2008 (Edition 2).
The preface for AS/NZS62087.2.2(Int):2009 sets out some of the requirements for televisions.
