Legal obligations for retailers

State regulations for energy labelling and MEPS primarily control the supply of appliances - the supply of appliances mainly occurs through retails outlets. So as a retailer it is in your interests to understand your obligations under the law.

The regulations set out the legal requirements in detail, but the requirements are quite straight forward. In summary, the main requirements include:

Retailers are obliged to ensure that each product which is "prescribed" under energy efficiency laws and is offered for sale has an approved energy label affixed or it has been approved for MEPS (as applicable);
The label must not be obscured when the product is on display;
Conflicting information must not be shown with or near the label.
