6 August 2020

Following representations from industry and in light of the impact of COVID-19, the Minister for Energy and Emissions Reductions has taken a decision to delay the commencement of the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (Refrigerated Cabinets) Determination 2019 (the 2019 Determination) from 15 August 2020 to 1 May 2021.

Many businesses have expressed a strong view that the commencement date for the Determination should be made later due to the effects of COVID-19 on supply chains and test laboratory capability.

Having received the agreement of the States and Territories, the 2019 Determination  will be revoked and replaced by a new determination, the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (Refrigerated Cabinets) 2020 (the 2020 Determination). Registration of the 2020 Determination is expected to be made in the coming days.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR 2012 REGISTRATIONS

Products registered to the 2012 Determination that comply with the 2020 GEMS requirements may be supplied for the duration of their registration. Once these registrations expire, suppliers must register the products to the 2020 Determination to continue supplying their product.

Registrations to the 2012 Determination that are due to expire soon will have the option of renewing their product to the 2012 Determination or the 2020 Determination. Automatic emails will continue to be sent from the Energy Rating Product Registration System (Registration System) to notify registrants of forthcoming expirations.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR 2019 REGISTRATIONS

Products registered to the 2019 Determination will need to register again to the 2020 Determination. The re-registration process will require minimal input, and fees will not be charged. A step-by-step guide and the Energy Rating Team will be available to assist registrants complete this process once the 2020 Determination has been published.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR FUTURE REGISTRATIONS

Registrations that occur after 15 August 2020 and prior to 1 May 2021 will have the option of registering to either the 2012 Determination or the 2020 Determination. The 2012 Determination covers remote and self-contained RDCs and commercial refrigerators and freezers. The 2020 Determination expands the product classes to include refrigerated storage cabinets, small ice cream freezer cabinets and scooping cabinets.

WHAT OTHER CHANGES ARE THERE IN THE 2020 DETERMINATION?

Apart from changing the commencement date, no other substantive changes will be made in the 2020 Determination.

WHEN WILL THE CHANGES OCCUR?

The changes will be implemented prior to 15 August 2020 and confirmed via the Energy Rating Website – www.energyrating.gov.au.
