In April 2018, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Energy Council agreed to further improve lighting energy efficiency regulation by phasing out inefficient halogen lamps (light bulbs) in Australia and introducing minimum standards for LED lamps in line with EU standards in Australia and New Zealand. COAG Energy Council also agreed to align the timing of Australia’s LED regulation with the EU regulatory process. As finalisation of the EU regulation was delayed by 12 months (published December 2019 to come into effect in September 2021), the Australian regulations are also expected to come into effect late 2021.
The Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources will be consulting with industry and consumers about the proposed changes over coming months. The Department will update the relevant Determinations under the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (GEMS) Act 2012 following the consultation process.
