Decision RIS on the energy efficiency of digital displays

The Decision Regulatory Impact Statement (DRIS) for digital displays recommends policies to improve Australia’s and New Zealand’s television and computer monitor energy efficiency requirements and harmonise these with European requirements. The DRIS also recommends expanding the scope of energy efficiency regulation to include requirements for digital signage displays.

The Energy and Climate Ministers Council for Australia approved the recommendations in the DRIS.

The recommendations that were agreed include:

  • increase the minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) applying to televisions and computer monitors
  • expand the scope of these standards
  • introduce energy efficiency requirements for digital signage displays for the first time
  • change energy labelling requirements to make them easier for retailers to comply with easier for consumers to understand.

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water will prepare a new GEMS determination covering these products. The determination will be published as an exposure draft for public comments and submissions.

Visit Electronic Displays: televisions, computer monitors, and digital signage displays on the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority website’s for more information on the development of these requirements in New Zealand.
