New Determination for Air Conditioners over 65 Kilowatts
On 6th January 2021, the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (Air Conditioners above 65kW) Determination 2020 (the 2020 Determination) was registered. It comes into force in Australia from 1 April 2022.
The 2020 Determination introduces minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for air conditioners greater than 65kW. It also requires registrants to provide Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER) information when registering models of these products.
From 1 April 2022, registrants who supply or import air conditioners covered by the 2020 Determination must register all models of their products with the GEMS Regulator through the Energy Rating Product Registration System.
Registrants can choose to register prior to 1 April 2022 if they wish to do so.

The introduction of the 2020 Determination builds on the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (Air Conditioners up to 65kW) Determination 2019 published on 1 April 2019.
It follows industry consultation throughout 2019 and 2020, and brings into effect the decision made by the COAG Energy Council in December 2018 to introduce tighter MEPS for air conditioners.
